What the numbers say about Spain in 2026
The count uses Saturday and Sunday as the weekly rest days, the standard pattern in Spain. Only holidays that apply across the whole country are deducted. Someone working in a region with its own extra days will have a little more time off than these figures show.
3 holidays land on a rest day this year: Assumption (15 Aug), All Saints Day (1 Nov), Constitution Day (6 Dec). On the calendar alone that means no extra time off. Some countries move the day off to the next working day; whether that applies here is set by national rules, so check before you plan around it.
July is the longest working month with 23 days, and May the shortest with 20. A gap of 3 days is enough to make a fixed monthly target noticeably harder in some months than in others. Across quarters, Q1 is the leanest at 62 working days (January, February, March).
Among the 204 countries we track for 2026, the median number of national holidays is 12. With 10, Spain sits below the middle of the range, around the 24th percentile (the lowest count this year is 3, the highest 49).
Holidays create 4 stretches of three or more days off in a row. The longest lasts 3 days, from 3 April to 5 April (Good Friday). There are also 3 bridge days: a single working day squeezed between a holiday and the weekend, where one day of leave turns into four or more days away. See every long weekend in 2026.
How holidays work in Spain
A Spanish worker's holidays come from three sources. The central government publishes a national list. Each autonomous community can then replace some of those dates with regional ones. Finally, every municipality chooses two local holidays of its own.
The total is capped at fourteen public holidays a year, but the actual set of fourteen depends on the region and the town. Two people working for the same employer in different cities can easily have different days off.
Only the national layer is counted on this page, so the real number in a given office may be off by several days. Local holidays are especially hard to see from outside, since they are often a town's patron saint festival and appear on no national calendar.
Also plan for the puente, or bridge. When a holiday lands on a Tuesday or Thursday, many people take the Monday or Friday in between as leave, and in some industries this is close to expected. Bridge days are not holidays and are not subtracted here, yet a staffing plan that leaves them out will usually be too optimistic.
