What the numbers say about Belgium in 2027
The count uses Saturday and Sunday as the weekly rest days, the standard pattern in Belgium. Only holidays that apply across the whole country are deducted. Someone working in a region with its own extra days will have a little more time off than these figures show.
5 holidays land on a rest day this year: Easter Sunday (28 Mar), Labour Day (1 May), Assumption Day (15 Aug), Christmas Day (25 Dec), St. Stephen's Day (26 Dec). On the calendar alone that means no extra time off. Some countries move the day off to the next working day; whether that applies here is set by national rules, so check before you plan around it.
December is the longest working month with 23 days, and May the shortest with 18. A gap of 5 days is enough to make a fixed monthly target noticeably harder in some months than in others. Across quarters, Q1 is the leanest at 61 working days (January, February, March).
2026 had 251working days, so 2027gives you 1 more working day.Plans copied over from last year without adjusting for that difference will be slightly off from January onwards.
Among the 204 countries we track for 2027, the median number of national holidays is 12. With 14, Belgium sits above the middle of the range, around the 75th percentile (the lowest count this year is 3, the highest 49).
Holidays create 5 stretches of three or more days off in a row. The longest lasts 4 days, from 26 March to 29 March (Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday). There is also one bridge day: a single working day squeezed between a holiday and the weekend, where one day of leave turns into four or more days away. See every long weekend in 2027.
6 holidays change date compared with 2026: Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Day after Ascension Day, Whit Monday. Movable dates are the ones most often missed when last year's schedule is reused.
How holidays work in Belgium
Belgian workers do not lose out when a holiday lands on the weekend. If a public holiday falls on a Sunday, or on a day the employee would not normally work, the employer has to give a replacement day, typically agreed at company level or fixed by the sector.
As a result, the Belgian working year changes much less from one year to the next than the German or Italian one. It also means the working day counts shown here are an upper limit: replacement days are not on the public calendar, so the true figure can be lower.
Belgium additionally recognises three community holidays, one each for the Flemish, French and German-speaking communities. Regional public services observe them, but they are not general days off for private employers, and they are not included in these counts.
