What the numbers say about Italy in 2026

The count uses Saturday and Sunday as the weekly rest days, the standard pattern in Italy. Only holidays that apply across the whole country are deducted. Someone working in a region with its own extra days will have a little more time off than these figures show.

6 holidays land on a rest day this year: Easter Sunday (5 Apr), Liberation Day (25 Apr), Assumption Day (15 Aug), St. Francis of Assisi's Day (4 Oct), All Saints Day (1 Nov), St. Stephen's Day (26 Dec). On the calendar alone that means no extra time off. Some countries move the day off to the next working day; whether that applies here is set by national rules, so check before you plan around it.

July is the longest working month with 23 days, and May the shortest with 20. A gap of 3 days is enough to make a fixed monthly target noticeably harder in some months than in others. Across quarters, Q1 is the leanest at 62 working days (January, February, March).

Among the 204 countries we track for 2026, the median number of national holidays is 12. With 13, Italy sits above the middle of the range, around the 64th percentile (the lowest count this year is 3, the highest 49).

Holidays create 3 stretches of three or more days off in a row. The longest lasts 3 days, from 4 April to 6 April (Easter Sunday, Easter Monday). There are also 4 bridge days: a single working day squeezed between a holiday and the weekend, where one day of leave turns into four or more days away. See every long weekend in 2026.

How holidays work in Italy

When an Italian public holiday falls on a Sunday, it is not replaced; the day off is simply lost. That alone makes the number of working days in Italy swing more from year to year than in countries with substitution rules.

Each comune also celebrates its patron saint, and in the big cities this means real closures, not a symbolic date. Milan stops on 7 December for Sant'Ambrogio, Rome on 29 June and Naples on 19 September, while Florence, Genoa and Turin all mark 24 June. These are left out of the national figures shown here.

August needs its own warning. Ferragosto on 15 August counts as only one public holiday, yet large parts of Italian manufacturing and many professional firms shut for a week or more around it. Read the August working day figure as the most you could expect, not as a realistic plan.
