What the numbers say about United States in 2027
The count uses Saturday and Sunday as the weekly rest days, the standard pattern in United States. Only holidays that apply across the whole country are deducted. Someone working in a region with its own extra days will have a little more time off than these figures show.
March is the longest working month with 23 days, and February the shortest with 19. A gap of 4 days is enough to make a fixed monthly target noticeably harder in some months than in others. Across quarters, Q1 is the leanest at 61 working days (January, February, March).
2026 had 250working days, so 2027comes out exactly the same length.
Among the 204 countries we track for 2027, the median number of national holidays is 12. With 11, United States sits below the middle of the range, around the 38th percentile (the lowest count this year is 3, the highest 49).
Holidays create 9 stretches of three or more days off in a row. The longest lasts 3 days, from 1 January to 3 January (New Year's Day). There are also 2 bridge days: a single working day squeezed between a holiday and the weekend, where one day of leave turns into four or more days away. See every long weekend in 2027.
9 holidays change date compared with 2026: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labour Day and more. Movable dates are the ones most often missed when last year's schedule is reused.
How holidays work in United States
In the United States, federal holidays are binding only on federal agencies and their employees. No private employer is required to close on them; whether staff get the day off is a matter of company policy or a union agreement. The counts on this page therefore describe the federal calendar, and the difference between that calendar and actual private sector practice is wider here than in most countries we cover.
For federal purposes, a holiday that lands on a weekend is moved: Saturday holidays are observed on the Friday before and Sunday holidays on the Monday after. This keeps the number of federal working days fairly consistent from year to year.
Individual states also set their own holidays, some of which are important locally. They are not part of the national figures here.
